Think Globally, Act Locally - How to do it Better

October 27, 2007

The Marianist State Community and other members of the Marianist Family gathered in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 27 for a workshop entitled “Think Globally, Act Locally – How Can We Do it Better.”  35 participants were involved throughout the day in activities to look at the big picture of globalization.

In small group discussions the participants focused on the four principles of the Earth Charter – 1) Respect and care for the community of life, 2) Ecological integrity, 3) Social and economic justice and 4) Democracy, nonviolence and peace.  Videos from Mercy Connections in Cincinnati, OH and the Institute of Integrated Rural Development in Bangladesh offered a broader Marianist voice on how globalization affects lower income persons.  Further reflection gave way to an in depth conversation on what the Marianist Family can do to respond to global issues.

Participants were also given time to commit to doing something new or different as a result of the day.  There was commitment towards volunteerism, legislative advocacy, and building connections with Marianists worldwide to name a few.  Prayer started and ended this positive, thought provoking day.
