             MSJC is going to Rome!  We're making a proposal at the November meeting of the World Council of the Marianist Family about ways to promote action for social justice among Marianists throughout the world.  Click here to read our proposal - in English, French or Spanish!

Issue Teams Update - see the website for more details

  • Anti-Racism
    • Our subgroup, the Cultural Audit team, will do a pilot workshop in Dayton on Oct. 26.  The focus: increasing cultural awareness and appreciation of differences that too often divide us.  Contact Joanne McCracken - maypoint@aol.com - for more information.
    • Attractive cards featuring the Marianist Pledge and Prayer to Eliminate Racism are now available.  Contact Jim Vogt - jimvogt2@yahoo.com - to get copies.
  • Ecology & Environment
    • Volunteers Needed - The Archdiocese of Cincinnati's Social Action Office, in collaboration with local parishes and ministries including those at Mount St. John in Dayton, will host an International Artisan Market featuring fair trade goods from around the world at Bergamo Center on Dec. 10.  Goods will be ordered from Catholic Relief Service's Work of Human Hands Project, and we are also seeking goods from areas of active Marianist missions. We are in need of a number of volunteers prior to and during the sale to help with setting up tables, taking inventory, constructing education displays, coordinating a children's area, and much more. To lend a hand or for more information, email Tara Poling.
  • Death Penalty
    • Texans take note!!  Journey of Hope - from Violence to Healing is an organization that is led by murder victim family members who conduct public education speaking tours and advocate for alternatives to the death penalty.  Their Journey of Hope in Texas will run from Oct. 14-30.  Click here to see the current schedule of events.  Nolan HS and St. Mary's U. are 2 of the stops on the tour. 
  • Sweatshop Labor
    • Team meeting on Oct. 14.  Will focus especially on follow up to:
            1. The visit by UD students Ben Schnier and Emily Nohner to factories in Bangladesh that produce clothing for Wal-Mart, 
            2. St. Mary grad student Joe Jacobson's work as an intern with Fr. Bill Christensen in developing the strategy for a worker-owned factory in Bangladesh.  Contact Chair Al Prendergast

Be an Advocate for Justice

  • Need phone calls on Oct. 17 & 18 - When Congress reconvenes, call to urge them to provide adequate funding levels for human services and to abandon tax cuts for the wealthy.  Click here for info on how to call and for background info on the proposed cuts.
  • Let's create a U.S. Department of Peace - an idea whose time has come.  Click here to get information and become an advocate for the passage of legislation.

Events

  • The Adele Social Justice Project is offering a weekend immersion experience on Oct. 7-9 for young adults that will help participants to deepen their commitment to social justice & Catholic Social Teaching by emphasizing the spirit of Adele de Trenquelleon, founder of the Marianist Sisters, in addition to the general Marianist Charism. Please pray for its success.  Watch for our report on the weekend coming soon on the MSJC website.
  • Green Festival - a party with a purpose - to build a shared vision for a life affirming economy.  San Francisco Nov. 5 & 6.  www.greenfestivals.org.
