Washington DC from June 29-July 2. Team member, Lauren Olson, will join others from across the U.S. and Canada for public education and outreach about abolishing the death penalty. Lauren commented, "Working with such a faithful and dedicated group as the MSJC Death Penalty Team has shown me how small yet strategic acts of justice can go a long way. Margaret Mead summarized the work of MSJC best when she said, 'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.'" Sole Provider of Drug for U.S. Executions Faces Ethical Dilemma
The Death Penalty Information Center reports that "Lundbeck Inc., a Danish pharmaceutical company that is the sole manufacturer of pentobarbital for sale in the U.S., is facing an ethical dilemma regarding the use of its drug in executions." Denmark opposes capital punishment, as does the rest of the European Union. The company has written letters to prisons in eleven states demanding that their product not be used for executions; so far no responses have been received. Read more about their dilemma on the Issue Team's page.
Victims' Family Members and Law Enforcement Speak Out
Recent editorials have summarized some important opposition to the use of the death penalty. The New York Times speaks for many co-victims (the families of murder victims) who report that executions do not bring closure and that the entire process actually prolongs their suffering, as well as being a waste of money. The Danbury (CT) News-Times, reacting to two recent studies of the attitudes and opinions of law enforcement professionals, wrote that "The majority of police chiefs said the death penalty does not deter violent crime, and they rank the death penalty last in effective tools to fight crime."

Vatican Releases Major Climate Change Report
A working group of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, one of the oldest scientific institutes in the world, issued a sobering report on the impacts of the global retreat of mountain glaciers as a result of human activity. In their declaration, the working group calls, "on all people and nations to recognize the serious and potentially irreversible impacts of global warming caused by the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants..." Read the summary here. Read the entire report here.
Tip for Reducing Your Carbon Footprint - Fill It Up!
Fill your dishwasher before running it. Automatic dishwashers use less water than washing dishes by hand when they are full. But of course washing by hand uses only human energy.

GLBT Initiative
The Missing Fish Click here and scroll to page 7 to read this reflection by Lay Marianist, Tony Garascia. He emphasizes Mary's attitudes of listening, welcoming, and acceptance - especially in relation to the pain and rejection experienced by GLBT persons.
Catholic Attitudes on Gay and Lesbian Issues The Public Religion Research Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, independent organization which conducts research and education regarding religion, values and public life, surveyed Catholics about attitudes on gay and lesbian issues. They found:
- Catholics are more supportive of legal recognitions of same-sex relationships than members of any other Christian tradition and Americans overall.
- When same-sex marriage is defined explicitly as a civil marriage, support is dramatically higher among Catholics.
- Beyond the issue of same-sex marriage, Catholic support for rights of gay and lesbian people is strong and slightly higher than the general public.
- Catholics overwhelmingly reject the idea that sexual orientation can be changed.

Cleveland Presentation a Success GLBT Initiative team members Linda Zappacosta and Hank and Nancy Mascotte presented "A Place at the Marianist Table" last week to a gathering of 15 people at St. Aloysius Marianist Community in Cleveland. As one participant commented: "What I see now more clearly is how homophobic culture operates in a way to put down GLBT persons and it spreads like an unconscious wildfire. We need to create more spaces where people can engage in respectful dialogue." |
Action for Advocates
Join the "Circle of Protection" for the Poor Please support this ecumenical statement that those who are already suffering should not be made to suffer even more in order to reduce the federal deficit. Evangelical, Roman Catholic, mainline Protestant, black, and Hispanic church leaders came together to say that Christians will form a "Circle of Protection" around programs that serve the most vulnerable in our nation and around the world. Read the press release from the US bishops and add your voice by joining the Circle of Protection now. Urge President Obama to Support Peace Negotiations in the Holy LandA new peace initiative by a group of former Israeli officials, along with the Arab Peace Initiative and the Geneva Accord, offer key principles and ideas for negotiations to achieve comprehensive Arab-Israeli-Palestinian peace. Achieving peace is urgent given the current stalemate in negotiations and the threat of escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Contact President Obama and urge his support.

A Thought to Ponder
"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it... Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
