ACT NOW - Don't Deport Benita Veliz - Pass the DREAM Act
Benita Veliz is an honor graduate from St. Mary's U. who is facing deportation to Mexico. Read about her story in the New York Times or the San Antonio Express-News. Then click here to send a message to Congress to pass the DREAM Act, which would allow Benita and thousands other young people like her to stay in the US. Fortunately, Rep. Charles Gonzales of San Antonio has intervened on Benita's behalf and is working to delay her deportation until Congress takes up the DREAM Act. |

"Fortunate Families" Collaborate Across the Country
This national Catholic organization is very active in working with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals and their families. They have a web site and a monthly newsletter and keep current on events in the Church and the nation. A recent initiative is a group of "listening Catholic parents" found on their website. These parents are stationed throughout the country. They are willing to take calls and offer insights and support to families and their GLBT children. http://www.fortunatefamilies.com. | |

STARVIN' FOR JUSTICE 2009: The 16th Annual Fast & Vigil in Washington, DC June 28th-July 2nd, 2009
The Marianist Social Justice Collaborative is a sponsor of the four-day Fast & Vigil which takes place on the sidewalk in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. It is a great experience and training ground for people who want to practice, or become very adept, at talking about the death penalty. Tens of thousands of tourists, from all over the U.S. and throughout the world, pass by the vigil and table, so the opportunity for dialogue and discussion at a real grass-roots level is invaluable to the movement. Click here for a flyer for the event or click here to register and for more information.l
Is the Death Penalty Worth What it Costs Us?
That provocative question might not be "news" when it is asked by a known opponent of the death penalty. However, when it is posed by a federal judge with thirty years on the bench, it certainly merits attention. Judge Boyce Martin, Chief Justice of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, concurring in a capital case (Wiles v. Bagley) on April 14, wrote that the death penalty is "so fundamentally flawed at its very core that it is beyond repair." He answers his own question by writing, "In my view, this broken system would not justify its costs even if it saved money, but those who do not agree may want to consider just how expensive the death penalty really is."
Repeal Bill Passes Colorado House
On April 21 the Colorado House narrowly passed a bill to repeal the state's use of the death penalty. According to the Denver Daily News the bill faces an uncertain future in the state Senate and, should it pass, on the Governor's desk. The bill attempts to help close unsolved murder cases by shifting funds used to prosecute death penalty cases to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, currently facing over 1,400 unsolved murders across the state.
Thanks to Bros. Frank O'Donnell and Phil Aaron
Bros. Frank O'Donnell and Phil Aaron recently stepped down from membership on the
Death Penalty Team. Both had been involved with the team almost since its inception about 10 years ago. We allow them to go into "retirement" knowing that they leave big shoes to fill, but also with deepest appreciation for their years of service.

Actions for Advocates
Call on Investors to Stand up for Human Rights in Darfur Economic pressure on the Sudan government is a key to protecting countless civilians who are vulnerable to armed attack, rape, displacement and killing. If
the government receives enough pressure from the oil companies they depend on for 90% of their export revenue, things will change. Click here to call on large U.S. investment firms to raise concern about Darfur with oil companies in which they are invested. |

Thought to Ponder
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me; it is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.
George Bernard Shaw
