SM Assembly in Louisville - Quite a Gathering

Over 300 brothers and priests of the Marianist Province USA gathered in Louisville KY from June 30 - July 3 for an assembly focused on their newly adopted strategic plan, "Vision 2020 - Our Missionary Project."  It was a wonderful gathering characterized by reflection, honest sharing, prayer, hopefulness, and daring as the province faces both the opportunities and challenges of the next 10 years.  Pictured below are the members of the province who are involved in leadership with MSJC, either on one of our issue teams or on the steering committee.  We thank them for their service to the Marianist Family in building a more just society.

Troy Davis Update - July 2010

Troy Davis

Troy Davis has been on Georgia's death row since 1991, following his conviction for the 1989 murder of off-duty Savannah (GA) police officer Mark Allen MacPhail. Following a U.S. Supreme Court order to take new testimony, U.S. District Judge William T. Moore held two days of hearings in June but did not issue a ruling. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, he asked lawyers for both sides to submit briefs in early July and said he would then issue a ruling as promptly as possible.

Texas Judge to Hold Hearing on Risk of Executing the Innocent

In Houston, Texas (one of the states targeted by the Issue Team) lawyers in a capital case have asked for a hearing "to listen to evidence on whether there's a substantial risk the state's death penalty law allows for the possible execution of an innocent person," according to the Houston Chronicle.  "I think everybody in the United States would agree that the possibility exists" an innocent person has been executed, one of the lawyers told the paper.  Attorneys are also planning to raise other issues at the hearing, including the reliability of eyewitness testimony. The hearing will begin on November 8.

The Death Penalty Issue Team is seeking new members, especially from California and Missouri.  Interested...or know someone who might be? Please contact Sr. Grace Walle, FMI, Issue Team Chair or Jim Vogt, MSJC Director.

A Thought to Ponder

"As never before in history, common destiny beckons us to seek a new beginning...Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life."
