Everyday Justice

July's Reflection comes from Andrea Stiles.

"This weekend at Mass there was a teenager wearing a shirt asking "What is your passion?"  I looked and knew immediately mine is social justice.  And at this point in my life with an 8 month old and 3 year old, I often ask myself how do I live out this passion?"

Supreme Court Blocks Execution of Mentally Ill Killer    In one of its final decisions of the 2006-07 term, the United States Supreme Court overturned the death sentence of a delusional murderer.  While declining to lay out a new standard for competency in capital cases, it did find that existing protections had not been afforded.  Read more about this case on the Issue Team's Web page under Death Penalty Files by clicking here.

Healthy Lawn Care
Conserving energy by taking natural care of our lawns and landscapes can help lesson the impacts of global warming through reducing carbon emissions of machinery and increasing plant uptake of carbon dioxide  and reducing energy expended in chemical additives in fertilizers and pesticides.  Try this:

1.  Mow Less Area. Decrease lawn area by  planting gardens and using more area for native plant landscaping.
2.  Mow Less Often. A taller lawn is healthier and has less water loss and better aeration.
3.  Improve Air Quality. Use electric mowers and tools or, better yet, hand tools.  Gas mowers emit over 10 times as much hydrocarbon as a typical car and weedeaters 21 times more. On hot days these can also contribute to ozone and other negative impacts on human health.
4.  Water deeply but not often.  Rely on rainwater as much as possible to help preserve our valuable water resources.   If you need to water, it's better to water deeply to encourage root growth, in the early morning so you don't lose water through evaporation.
