Do you know where your food comes from?   This is a great time of year for people who love good food - and who doesn't?  Farm markets and roadside stands are popping up all over, with offerings that are tastier and more fresh than their out of season counterparts.  But superior produce is only one of many benefits to buying local.  You'll also keep food dollars in the local economy longer, support small-scale family farmers and protect the environment.  The Environment and Ecology team has made it easy for you to find out what is in season in your area, locate a farm market or u-pick stand and learn more about the globalization of our food supply and the benefits of buying local.  So go ahead and put your money where your mouth is  -

  • Death Penalty- go to http://www.msjc.net/DeathPenalty/default.aspx for more info on the following activities:
    • Anti-death penalty activists are converging on Washington, D.C. for the 12th Annual Fast & Vigil to Abolish the Death Penalty. "Starvin' for Justice" runs from 12am Wednesday, June 29 through midnight Saturday, July 2 - four days of activities commemorating the historic 1972 and 1976  Supreme Court rulings that suspended the death penalty in the United States and later allowed executions to resume. More information and a link to the daily schedule are posted on the Team's web page.  And remember -- participation at a distance - through prayer, fasting, and local vigils and events in your own community - can also be a very meaningful way to support the cause.
    • Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that "Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person."  It also inspired the name of the newsletter published by Murder Victims' Families for Human Rights. MVFHR hopes ARTICLE 3 will become an important new resource for their effort to change the public discourse about the death penalty from one that takes place in a criminal justice context to a discussion about Human Rights. More information about -- and a link to -- the first issue are on the Team's web page.
  • Sweatshop Labor
