Ohio Death Sentences Reach Historic Low in 2008
Ohio, one of the states targeted by the Issue Team, sentenced three people
to death in 2008. This is the lowest number since capital punishment was reinstated and mirrors a national trend. The number of people charged with a capital crime is also lower than it has been in the past. To read more click here.
Maryland Governor Will Sponsor Abolition Bill
Martin O'Malley, the governor of Maryland, one of the states targeted by the Issue Team, said he will do "everything in my power" to get his state to repeal capital punishment. He has long opposed the death penalty because of fears of a wrongful execution and concern that the process wastes resources that could be better spent preventing violent crime. GLBT Initiative
From Coretta Scott King
"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of gay and lesbian people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice. But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr. said: 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brother and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people." |

A Thought to Ponder
". . . We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. . . ."
