Everyday Justice - Personal stories of those living out social justice day by day

February's reflection comes from the Adele Social Justice Project's Resource Manual.  Using Adele as their model, members of the Marianist Family contributed letters on social justice topics.  We feature Bro. Brian Halderman's letter from the Hospitality section.

"It was a cold night in February 1999 when I joined a group of students from the University of Dayton at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility near Lucasville for the execution of Wilford Berry, the first Ohio execution since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976. ...That night changed me. .... I realized that Jesus was killed by state sanctioned death. He was executed. Christ's response was that of forgiveness.  "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do." It also struck me that there are a lot of people who have been victims of violent crime and lost loved ones to murder who hold vengeance in their hearts and I wondered what I could do to help them overcome such hurt and despair...."

Impending Executions

None currently scheduled pending the Supreme Court's decision in Baze V Rees. Click Here

The Year of No Executions

2008 marks the 40th anniversary of 1968 -- the first year in the history of the United States that not a single person was executed.  That got Vince Beiser, a California-based writer who often writes on criminal justice issues, thinking about what has happened since then.  Click Here to read more of his thoughts, and find a link to his essay - "Falling Out of Love with Death."

Are death penalty juries fairly representative?

"Jurors in capital cases," explained Richard Dieter, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center," must be interrogated about their positions on the death penalty.  If they are opposed to it in all cases, they will not be permitted to serve."  Can such juries look like society at large?  His answer is "No."  Click Here to learn the results of the survey they commissioned.

The Marianist Environmental Education Center (MEEC) has produced a Lenten Energy Fast resource for use by individuals or communities.  The booklet features brief readings, the most recent scientific projections of how climate change will impact the peoples of the world, inspirational stories, and scripture-based reflection questions.  The booklet also features "40 Ways in 40 Days" to conserve energy.  Click Here to download a copy of the booklet.

GLBT committee
GLBT  Initiative Team Meets

In the spirit of recommendations from Always Our Children, the pastoral letter from the U.S. Bishops' Committee on Marriage & Family, a new MSJC team is exploring possibilities for providing more effective pastoral care within the Marianist Family among families of gay/lesbian Catholics. The effort is consistent with the Church's teaching - especially considering the principles of Catholic Social Teaching - and is profoundly pastoral in its outreach. The team, which met in St. Louis recently, includes (front row) Dominic Garascia , Nancy Mascotte, Beth Garascia (chair), Linda Zappacosta ; (back row) Hank Mascotte, Jim Vorndran SM, Terry Weik SM.  They have developed a two-hour program, " A Place at the Marianist Table," that considers the struggles of faithful gay/lesbian Catholics and how groups can be more welcoming and inclusive. If your lay or religious Marianist community or group is interested in experiencing the program or would like more information, contact B Garascia@sdcglobal.net.

Catching up with Jesus  This book by social psychologist Diarmuid O'Murchu is an exploration of the person of Jesus derived from the theories of quantum theology.  For Jesus "nonviolence is at the heart of this new dispensation, in which we are all called to love and forgive even our enemies. . . . Resurrection is an affirmation and celebration of the fullness of life as lived by Jesus..." p. 26.  The Crossroad Publishing Company

A THOUGHT TO PONDER

The Church leads us into the Lenten season by way of two stories.  In the first story, Jesus recognizes his purpose in life at the River Jordan.(Mt. 3:13-16)  In the second story, Jesus goes into a deserted place and there experiences the cost of his fidelity to that purpose. (Mt. 4:11)  Nevertheless, he embraces that purpose.  If we walk with Jesus this Lenten season, Jesus will walk with us.

    I am the way,

                 the truth,

                    and the life.
